Storage Tips

Preparing For Storage
  • Rent the smallest amount of space you will need and pack the unit full (leaving 18" of clearance from the sprinklers as per fire code), we can always add a 2nd unit if needed. It is recommended to leave an aisle way in middle if possible for access and check on your space every few months if possible for any issues.
  • Start by gathering as many boxes as you think you will need as well as tape, markers, and packing material (e.g., foam shipping peanuts, bubble wrap, packing paper or towels/blankets). We offer all you might need in our office as well as a planing sheet that details all the boxes and packing items available.
  • If possible, try to use uniformly sized boxes for easy stacking, seal them well with adequate tape. Totes are a great option as well.
  • Make up an inventory list of your items and keep it in a safe place (at home, in cloud service or in a safe deposit box) away from the unit.
  • List contents of boxes on all four sides; number the boxes and stack heavier items on bottom and lighter/fragile items on top.
  • Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25-30 pounds (although we suggest not putting too much in each box).
Protecting Your Items
  • If renting a drive-up/exterior unit, place your storage items on 2x4 boards or on pallets to guard against dampness. The concrete floor may become cold and damp, can also place a protective cover such as plastic on the floor under your goods.
  • Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (e.g., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, or paint). Only one set of (4) seasonal tires per space are allowed.
  • Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes, stack them on top.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked “FRAGILE” and stacked on end/vertically.
  • Avoid placing sharp or heavy objects on top of upholstered furniture, use plastic dust covers and/or wrap them in blankets with shrink wrap. Cover stuffed furniture with plastic, blankets, and/or mover's wrap to protect against dust and pests.
  • If can't lay mattresses flat, stand mattresses on their sides, prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy, and remember to place them in mattress bags.
  • Wipe any items made of metal - bikes, metal tables, tools, etc. - with machine oil to prevent rusting. Wood furniture/items should be cleaned and sealed with proper oil and/or cleaning agent before placing in storage.

Packing Your Storage Unit
  • Plan your storage space. Place items that you may need to access often in the front of the unit, items of higher value should be placed in rear and out of sight if possible. Do not store firearms, ammunitions, or other items of this nature.
  • Try to leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit for easier access. Leave a small space between the walls and boxes to allow for air circulation.
  • Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside each other. Use mover's wrap to wrap the handles together.
  • Put TVs and other electronics in the rear of your unit, take extra precautions to pack them appropiately and use the boxes they came in if available.
  • Tables that have removable legs should be broken down to save space, make sure to keep hardware for them in bags attached to the items if possible.
  • Sofas and loveseats often can be stored on end to save floor space. Wrap cushions in plastic and place on sofas or stacked towards top on the unit.
  • Larger furnitures/desks/dressers make excellent 'packaging cases' for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes. Vacuum bags are great for clothes as well. Always empty and leave doors open on refrigerators and freezers to prevent mold/mildew and odors from developing.
  • Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, knick-knacks, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels, or blankets to prevent breakage. Always stack heavier boxes/totes on the bottom and lighter ones on the top.
